dc.description.abstract | The application of wound dressing is very critical in maintaining open wounds. Various aspects highly affect the effectiveness of wound dressing. The ideal wound dressing has to be able to absorb wound exudate as well to retain its structural integrity. Moreover, wound dressing should be able to prevent microbial infections. Keratin and pectin have been known as a promising constituent in making hydrogels for wound dressing. These constituents were considered to be safe, biodegradable and stable as a hydrogel formulation. Keratin-pectin hydrogel was also suggested to be compatible with incorporation of Clindamycin as a n antimicrobial agent. Different concentrations of hydrogels with different ratios of keratin-pectin were made to determine the ideal formulation for a good wound dressing. The selection of hydrogels were based on several characterization studies including swelling, erosion and antimicrobial properties. The results were analyzed and pectin has shown promising swelling abilities in 2 % concentrations. As for the keratin-pectin hydrogels, it was found that the formulation of KP 2% 1:2 still has a good amount of swelling capabilities as well as the capability to maintain its structural integrity. In addition to antimicrobial agent clindamycin, the formulations of KP 2 % 1:2 C were found to have similar capabilities as KP 2 % 1:2 in terms of swelling and erosion. Moreover, KP 2 % 1:2 C also found to be susceptible in both S. Aureus and E. Coli despite clindamycin not have the spectrum against E. Coli. Hence incorporating clindamycin to keratin-pectin hydrogel was found to be promising as an ideal formulation for wound dressing. | en_US |
